Update tracing to collect from reasons (#29975)
This updates the `outputFileTracing` to fix a few cases we noticed where files weren't caught and also ensures we match webpack's `esm` resolving so that we don't include `cjs` files when webpack expects `esm`, it also updates to the latest `@vercel/nft` version which removes the caching in favor of ensuring the `reasons` map contains all parents allowing us to trace all entries in one `nodeFileTrace` run and the collect the separate files for each entry from the `reasons` map giving us much better performance/reliability.

This also ensures we don't include static image imports when enabled in the traces since they can drastically increase deployment size on larger projects.

Migrate server-sent events HMR connection to WebSocket (#29903)
This replaces the server-sent events HMR connection with a WebSocket connection to prevent hitting browser connection limits, allow sending events back from the browser, and overall better performance.

This approach sets up the the `upgrade` event listener on the server immediately when created via `next dev` and on the first request using `req.socket.server` when created via a custom server. In a follow-up PR we can push the files changed via the WebSocket as well.

Use Writable instead of Observable (#29007)
Use `Writable` instead of `Observable` and remove the `zen-observable` dependencies. I initially opted to use `Observable` for simplicity and fast iteration, but we should really just use `Writable` directly (or some other stream in the future).

React's streaming SSR has some [specific requirements](https://github.com/reactwg/react-18/discussions/66#discussioncomment-944266) on the stream API. Rather than trying to also squeeze a `Readable` in here, which might be more standard for node apps, I've just followed React's lead. By limiting ourselves to just `Writable`, it ought to be easier to adopt a different stream type in the future if desired.

The React `pipeToNodeWritable` API requires us to pass a stream immediately, but we don't actually have a `ServerResponse` to give it until `RenderResult.pipe(...)` is called later. For that reason, we pass React a `Writable` that we will simply forward to `res` later. This mechanism of deferring is `NodeWritablePiper`, which is just a function that can be called with `ServerResponse` (or another `Writable`, as we now do to render to string for static results) to have content written to it. `NodeWritablePiper` takes a `next` argument so that we can chain both synchronous and asynchronous pipers together.

Also does some clean up and adds another streaming test for backpressure.

Update test config to leverage swc (#28400)
This updates our `jest` configuration to no longer use `babel-jest` and instead uses `@swc/jest` which is much faster. This also updates to the latest version of `jest`, fixes our `tsconfig.json` used for tests (previously types in `node_modules` weren't resolved correctly), and ensures `next/dist` isn't un-necessarily transpiled in `jest`.

Update util to 0.12.4 (#27939)
Chrome 92 started to disable `SharedArrayBuffer` without cross-origin isolation which can be enabled by sending [the page with special HTTP headers](https://web.dev/cross-origin-isolation-guide/). This change causes Chrome to emit a warning in DevTools console and [developers are confused with the message](https://github.com/vercel/next.js/issues/21708). `util` is one of the libraries that uses `SharedArrayBuffer` and is causing the warning to appear in the console.

Luckily, the issue in `util` has been resolved in [v0.12.4] and I would like to propose applying the fixed version to this library.

For fixing #21708

Add rootDir setting to eslint-plugin-next (#27918)
## Introduction

This PR enables setting a `rootDir` for a Next.js project, and follows the same pattern used by [`@typescript-eslint/parser`](https://github.com/typescript-eslint/typescript-eslint/tree/master/packages/parser#parseroptionsproject).

## Details

Previously, users had to pass paths to the rule itself.
```js
module.exports = {
  rules: {
    "@next/next/no-html-link-for-pages": [
      "error",
      // This could be a string, or array of strings.
      "/packages/my-app/pages",
    ],
  },
};
```

With this PR, this has been simplified (the previous implementation still works as expected).
```js
module.exports = {
  settings: {
    next: {
      rootDir: "/packages/my-app",
    },
  },
  rules: {
    "@next/next/no-html-link-for-pages": "error",
  },
};
```

Further, this rule allows the use of globs, again aligning with `@typescript-eslint/parser`.
```js
module.exports = {
  settings: {
    next: {
      // Globs
      rootDir: "/packages/*",
      rootDir: "/packages/{app-a,app-b}",
      // Arrays
      rootDir: ["/app-a", "/app-b"],
      // Arrays with globs
      rootDir: ["/main-app", "/other-apps/*"],
  },
};
```

This enables users to either provide per-workspace configuration with overrides, or to use globs for situations like monorepos where the apps share a domain (micro-frontends).

This doesn't solve, but improves https://github.com/vercel/next.js/issues/26330.

[ESLint] Introduce a new setup process when next lint is run for the first time (#26584)
This PR introduces an improved developer experience when `next lint` is run for the first time.

### Current behavior

`eslint-config-next` is a required package that must be installed before proceeding with `next lint` or `next build`:

![image](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/12476932/123468791-43088100-d5c0-11eb-9ad0-5beb80b6c968.png)

Although this has helped many developers start using the new ESLint config, this has also resulted in a few issues:

- Users are required to install the full config (`eslint-config-next`) even if they do not use it or use the Next.js plugin directly (`eslint-plugin-next`).
  - #26348

- There's some confusion on why `eslint-config-next` needs to be installed or how it should be used instead of `eslint-plugin-next`.
  - #26574
  - #26475
  - #26438

### New behavior

Instead of enforcing `eslint-config-next` as a required package, this PR prompts the user by asking what config they would like to start. This happens when `next lint` is run for the first time **and** if no ESLint configuration is detected in the application.

<img src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/12476932/124331177-e1668a80-db5c-11eb-8915-38d3dc20f5d4.gif" width="800" />

- The CLI will take care of installing `eslint` or `eslint-config-next` if either is not already installed
- Users now have the option to choose between a strict configuration (`next/core-web-vitals`) or just the base configuration (`next`)
- For users that decide to create their own ESLint configuration, or already have an existing one, **installing `eslint-config-next` will not be a requirement for `next lint` or `next build` to run**. A warning message will just show if the Next.js ESLint plugin is not detected in an ESLint config.

In addition, this PR also:

- Fixes #26348
- Updates documentation to make it more clear what approach to take for new and existing ESLint configurations

Omit svg static imports if custom webpack config is defined (#26281)
This PR does a couple things:

1. Omit svg static imports if the user has defined custom webpack config with svg rule
2. Change TS type to `any` for svg imports to avoid conflicts with other plugins

The idea is that some users want to use `next/image` with static imports for most image types but not for svg and instead inline those images with a plugin.

Adds ESLint with default rule-set (#23702)
This PR re-includes ESLint with some notable changes, namely a guided setup similar to how TypeScript is instantiated in a Next.js application.

To add ESLint to a project, developers will have to create an `.eslintrc` file in the root of their project or add an empty `eslintConfig` object to their `package.json` file.

```js
touch .eslintrc
```

Then running `next build` will show instructions to install the required packages needed:

<img width="862" alt="Screen Shot 2021-04-19 at 7 38 27 PM" src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/12476932/115316182-dfd51b00-a146-11eb-830c-90bad20ed151.png">

Once installed and `next build` is run again, `.eslintrc` will be automatically configured to include the default config:

```json
{
  "extends": "next"
}
```

In addition to this change:

- The feature is now under the experimental flag and requires opt-in. After testing and feedback, it will be switched to the top-level namespace and turned on by default.
- A new ESLint shareable configuration package is included that can be extended in any application with `{ extends: 'next' }`
  - This default config extends recommended rule sets from [`eslint-plugin-react`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/eslint-plugin-react), [`eslint-plugin-react-hooks`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/eslint-plugin-react-hooks), and [`eslint-plugin-next`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@next/eslint-plugin-next)
- All rules in [`eslint-plugin-next`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@next/eslint-plugin-next) have been modified to include actionable links that show more information to help resolve each issue

Use regex lexer for gathering named groups from has (#23626)
This is a follow-up to https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/23588 to update to use a regex lexer to gather the named regex groups instead of attempting to gather them through executing the regex since it can fail to gather the regex groups when they are using specific matching. This also ensures we don't pass the value as a segment when value is defined and it doesn't use a capture group. Additional tests are added to cover these cases and documentation updated to reflect this.

Babel fast mode (#23760)
@timneutkens it'd be great to get your input.

These changes introduce a new Babel loader that eliminates much of the existing overhead, resulting in better HMR speeds.
 Multithreading is still in flight, and may be omitted if speed improvements end up being negligible. For now, the new loader is hidden behind an `experimental` flag.

Items to be completed before this PR is ready to merge:

- [x] reconfigure `ncc` to precompile the parts of `@babel/core` and `@babel/traverse` that we're accessing directly
- [x] change `@babel/core/...` imports to `ncc`ed version
- [x] ~~measure multithreading (not currently pushed) functionality, and include the functionality depending on the results~~ I'll open a separate PR for this
- [x] ensure TypeScript is happy with all imports as final step (`--no-verify` was used to bypass)

There will be two follow-up PRs:
- loader support for projects with custom `.babelrc`
- multithreaded loader (should the change we warranted after measurement)

Temporarily remove experimental ESLint integration (#23521)
This pull request **temporarily** removes ESLint, as it was not landed in accordance with our standard experimental policies. We are fully committed to landing this change again.

This is being reverted because:

- Next.js has very strict goals for its install size. This feature resulted in adding over 17MB, or a 43.6% increase.
- The feature was not first landed under the `experimental` key in `next.config.js`, rather, it was added under the stable namespace (top-level)
- Using the feature doesn't do a "guided setup" like TypeScript, it should ask you to "bring your own" dependencies for ESLint
- It uses a undesirable ESLint plugin name: `plugin:@next/next/recommended`. This should read out as strictly `next`, or as short as we can get it.
- Does not provide actionable warnings (missing link to resolve issue)
- Does not follow appropriate console output styling. We need to revisit how these are presented.

To re-land this, we need to ensure the following minimums are met:
- Very minor change in install size
- Fully experimental (i.e. flagged) with warnings
- Finalized package name and configuration shape, preferably so we can do ` { extends: 'next' } `.

This PR upgrades `jest-worker` and `jest-cli` to the latest pre-release version, also removed `jest-circus` which is included in Jest by default. `jest-worker@next` includes a fix for memory leak that we need (https://github.com/facebook/jest/pull/11187).

Telemetry-compatible tracing (#22713)
A number of changes here. I recommend viewing the diff with the <a href="?w=1">whitespace flag enabled</a>.

- OpenTelemetry is replaced with a custom and lightweight tracing solution.
- Three trace targets are currently supported: console, Zipkin, and NextJS.
- Tracing is now governed by environment variables rather than `--require instrument.js`.
  + `TRACE_TARGET`: one of `CONSOLE`, `ZIPKIN`, or `TELEMETRY`; defaults to `TELEMETRY` if unset or invalid.
  + `TRACE_ID`: an 8-byte hex-encoded value used as the Zipkin trace ID; if not provided, this value will be randomly generated and passed down to subprocesses.

Other sundry:

- I'm missing something, probably a setup step, with the Zipkin target. Traces are captured successfully, but you have to manually enter the Trace ID in order to view the trace - it doesn't show up in queries.
- I'm generally unhappy with [this commit](235cedcb3e). It is... untidy to provide a telemetry object via `setGlobal`, but I don't have a ready alternative. Is `distDir` strictly required when creating a new Telemetry object? I didn't dig too deep here.

As noted, there are a lot of changes, so it'd be great if a reviewer could:

- [ ] pull down the branch and try to break it
- [ ] check the Zipkin traces and identify possible regressions in the functionality

feat(next/image): remove sharp for wasm variant (#22253)
This pull request removes the native `sharp` dependency (which doesn't work on some Linux variants, nor **M1 Mac**) and replaces it with a wasm equivalent.

It also reduces Next.js' installed size by 27.3 MB.

The code is adapted from the [Squoosh CLI](https://github.com/GoogleChromeLabs/squoosh).

This PR still supports:

- Rotation normalization
- Resizing
- PNG
- JPEG
- Webp

However, it (temporarily) removes support for:
- Resizing Gifs
- Resizing Tiff

(these formats still get served and rendered correctly by the image component)

perf(next): use require.resolve instead of resolve (#19518)
**What's the problem this PR addresses?**

- ~~https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/18768 started to ncc babel and thus it's version of resolve which breaks PnP support~~
Babel replaced `resolve` with the builtin `require.resolve` and a polyfill for older node versions in https://github.com/babel/babel/pull/12439 which was upgraded in https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/20586
- `next` unnecessarily bundles the `resolve` package when `require.resolve` is builtin and can do the same job

**How did you fix it?**

- ~~Avoid running `resolve` through ncc~~
Added a test for https://github.com/vercel/next.js/issues/19334 (closes https://github.com/vercel/next.js/issues/19334)
- Replace `resolve` with `require.resolve`

fix(overlay): skip disable & upgrade platform (#20647)
This bundles ally.js into Next.js itself to upgrade a dependency they have pinned.

I tried every other major focus trap solution, even those used by some modal libraries, and they all failed.

`ally.js` is the only library that can do it correctly, so we're going to stick with it.

I also removed the `maintain/disabled` as we have a backdrop that would effectively result in the same. This reduces CPU strain.

Fix minifying inline CSS comments (#19167)
We accidentally regressed back in 9.5 and dropped support for inline CSS comments. PostCSS always parses these as pass-through (and not a syntax error), which can cause problems when minifying.

To ensure we generate valid CSS, this adds support for stripping the CSS comments from the build.

Update node-html-parser lib (#19103)
In working with @devknoll on https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/17770 we thought it would be a good idea to update to the latest minor version from 1.2.20 -> 1.4.9 based on some bug fixes in these minor releases. I would like to separate this out to simplify the growing changeset in https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/17770, where we need to use `node-html-parser` to parse HTML for custom react components.

The linked changeset above will take some time and there are some [useful bug fixes](https://github.com/taoqf/node-html-parser/commits/master) and features in this minor release we could benefit from anyway. Namely:

- add nextSibling, nextElementSibling
- missing node tag
- `<style>` tag is not parsed correctly

Also I think it's a good idea to separate this out for testing.

Upgrade sass-loader to 10.0.5 (#18972)

```
ncc Babel inlining (#18768)
This adds inlining for Babel and the Babel plugins used in next.
This is based to the PR at https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/18823.
The approach is to make one large bundle and then separate out the individual packages from that in order to avoid duplications.
In the first attempt the Babel bundle size was 10MB... using "resolutions" in the Yarn workspace to reduce the duplicated packages this was brought down to a 2.8MB bundle for Babel and all the used plugins which is exactly the expected file size here.
This will thus add a 2.8MB download size to the next package, but save downloading any babel dependencies separately, removing a large number of package dependencies from the overall install.
Remove @babel/preset-modules (#18759)
This is a prerequisite to being able to ncc inline the Babel dependencies in next.js.
The removal of preset-modules is based on replacing it with preset-env under `targets: { esmodules: true }`, as per the guidance from the package (https://www.npmjs.com/package/@babel/preset-modules):
> Starting from @babel/preset-env 7.9.0, you can enable the bugfixes: true option to get the same behavior as using @babel/preset-modules, but with support for custom targets. If you need to target browsers with native modules support (like this preset does), you can use targets: { esmodules: true }.
From the above, I'm pretty sure this is entirely a backwards compatible change, apart from the change to the runtime plugin list being visible. Perhaps @developit can confirm this as well.
