Add flag to switch to the experimental channel (#48896)
This PR does three things:
- Vendors the package `react-server-dom-webpack@experimental` as
`react-server-dom-webpack-experimental` similar to React and React DOM
- Upgrades all vendored React packages
- Re-lands the `experimentalReact` flag to switch between `@next` and
`@experimental` channels of React for app dir.

Fix NEXT-926.

Use ProxiedAsset instead of css_chunk_root_path to expose RSC CSS chunks (#48946)

the propagation of invalidation for CSS chunks.

turbopack: parse and propagate output: 'export' (#48046)
Depends on https://github.com/vercel/turbo/pull/4491

This adds support for the new `output: 'export'` configuration, and
propagates the value through to our Node.js rendering code to render.
Unfortunately, we don't support page-level configs at the moment, so we
can't set a `export const config = { dynamic: 'force-dynamic' }` and
test that the export value is being received (I've manually verified it,
though).

Preload css (#48840)
This PR implements preloading of CSS from RSC.

1. The underlying Flight protocol was extended in
https://github.com/facebook/react/pull/26502 to allow sending hints from
RSC to SSR and Client runtimes. React was updated to include these
changes.
2. We now call `ReactDOM.preload()` for each stylesheet used in a
layout/page layer

There are a few implementation details to take note of
1. we were previously using the `.browser` variant of a few React
packages. This was a holdover from when there was just browser and node
and we wanted to use the browser variant b/c we wanted the same code to
work in edge/node runtimes. React now publishes a `.edge` variant which
is like `.browser` but expects to be server only. This is necessary to
get the opt-in for `AsyncLocalStorage`.
2. Even with the above change, AsyncLocalStorage was not patched on the
global scope until after React was loaded. I moved this into a module
which is loaded first
3. The component passed to RSC's `renderToReadableStream` is not
actually part of the RSC module graph. If I tried to call
`ReactDOM.preload()` inside that function or any other function defined
inside `app-render.tsx` file it would actually see the wrong instance of
`react-dom`. I added a new export on the RSC top level export which
exposes a `preloadStyle(...)` function which just delegates to
`ReactDOM.preload(...)`. This makes the preload run in the right module
graph

~There are a couple of bugs in React that this work uncovered that I
will upstream. We may want to delay merging until they are addressed.
I'll update this comment when that is complete.~
1. ~React, during SSR, can emit a preload for a style twice in some
circumstances because late discovered stylesheets don't consider whether
a preload has already been flushed when preparing to reveal a boundary
they are within~
2. ~React, during RSC updates on the client, can preload a style that is
already in the document because it currently only looks for existing
preload links and does not consider if there is a stylesheet link with
the same href.~

~both of these issues will not break functionality, they just make the
network tab look at bit more noisy. We would expect network deduping to
prevent multiple actual loads~

The above React bugs were fixed and included now in the React update in
this PR

fix: Update @swc/helpers to v0.5.1 (#48808)
### What?

Update `@swc/helpers` to `v0.5.1`.

### Why?

Webpack merges `@swc/helpers@v0.4.x` and `@swc/helpers@v0.5.x`, due to `resolve.alias` config in 2f6ff0dab3/packages/next/src/build/webpack-config.ts (L1070-L1072)

To workaround it, `@swc/helpers@v0.5.1` reexports from entries just like `v0.4`.

Lazy DevHtmlAsset chunk generation (#48768)
This fixes a perf regression introduced in the chunking refactor, where
we would be eagerly generating all assets from the web entry and
fallback sources.

use structured images with metainfo (blur placeholder) (#48531)
### What?

add support for blur placeholder generation to turbopack

add `StructuredImageModuleType` which is used with `ModuleType::Custom`
to allow importing an image as `{ url, width, height, blurDataURL,
blurWidth, blurHeight }`

in contrast to next.js with webpack this will also generate blur
placeholder in development instead of using a _next/image reference.
This should lead to more production-like experience (at the cost of a
little bit of compilation time).

turbo PR: https://github.com/vercel/turbo/pull/4621

### Why?

Turbopack was crashing on `placeholder="blur"` before.

Make jest config serializable (#47620)
### What?

This PR ensures the jest configuration is json-serializable. It also
adds a bunch of typescript types.

### Why?

Jest requires that the configuration be json-serializable. See #47407
for details on the issues caused when it isn't. However, prior to this
commit, we were passing the entire next config as a property in the swc
jest transformer options. The next config includes some fields that are
not serializable, such as some functions.

### How?

In this PR we instead pluck the fields out of the next config that we
actually need and pass only those into the swc transformer.

This PR also adds a bunch of more precise typescript types where we were
previously just using `any`. This helps confirm that the configs are
being threaded through correctly. I think this type safety is enough to
confirm this commit and adding tests would just be redundant.

Fix fetch cache body handling and update edge-runtime deps (#48365)
This ensures we don't fail to return the full body when storing to
fetch-cache in edge-runtime. Also ensures the fetch cache tests are
running for Node.js v16 correctly.

Fetch handling was also failing on Node.js v16 due to react's use of
`res.clone()` being broken with undici which is fixed in the latest
version of edge-runtime so this bumps that.

fix NEXT-926

---

The root cause was that when copying the package.json, I removed all
fields except for a few (such as `exports`) but missed the `browser`
field. That caused the client bundle to resolve to the Node.js version
of React DOM, and then we had the `async_hooks` error. Added it back in
99c9b9e51f8b0d4e4503ece9d07bce09161f3341.

I reproduced the error with next-site earlier and confirmed that this
fix is good.

turbopack: bind server to IPv6 loopback (#47948)
This accomplishes 2 things:
1. binds the turbopack dev server to the IPv6 unspecified address
2. initializes our router with the same hostname/port of the turobpack
server

The first matches the behavior of the Node.js dev server. The IPv6
unspecified address is similar to IPv4's `0.0.0.0` address, allowing us
to accept connection from anywhere. Importantly, it _also_ allows
accepting IPv4 connections, making this address truly universal.

The second means the `request` parameter to any middleware will have the
correct origin, and the request's URL can be used to craft fetch
requests to API endpoints. `new URL(req.url).origin` will be the origin
of the turbopack dev server.

Vendor react@experimental under an experimentalReact flag (#47759)
Next.js includes various feature sets that depend on specific release
channels of React. However, our current setup only includes the `next`
channel of React, which restricts our ability to integrate with features
available on the `experimental` channel.

To address this limitation, this pull request introduces the following
changes:
- Vendors the `react@experimental` version, along with the corresponding
`react-dom` and `scheduler` packages.
- Modifies the `sync-react` script to also update the `experimental`
channel and removes `--version` as they're always synced to the latest
now.
- Retains the default behavior of using the `next` channel in the
`appDir` directory.
- Adds an option to switch to the `experimental` channel by setting
`experimental.experimentalReact: true` in the configuration.

Vendor @vercel/og and expose ImageResponse (#47657
### What?

This PR vendors @vercel/og and export `ImageResponse` from
`next/server`. When you render a opengraph image the below code snippets
will be legit:

```tsx
import { ImageResponse } from 'next/server'
export default function og() {
  return new ImageResponse(<div style={{ width: '100%', height: '100%' }}>hello</div>)
}
```

### Why?

To make development more easier, user can directly use `@vercel/og`
Image Response with nextjs instead of install it and use it. This makes
building metadata icons, og or twitter images more convenient.

Finalize HOC support with server entries and add encodeReply & decodeReply (#47438)
Revert some code in #47379 and finalize HOC support. We should require
the HOC to return a "use server" function, so there's no need to compile
the function call specially now.

To make that wrapping logic work, we need to allow passing a server
reference to another server reference. This usually happens in the
function closure in the HOC case, but ideally it's also allowed to
directly pass it as an argument. This requires adding React server DOM's
`encodeReply` and `decodeReply` and other corresponding changes,
including adding `busboy` (can probably be vendored?) as we need to
parse the multipart body now.

feat(cli): introduce --tailwind flag (#46927)
### What?

This PR introduces a new `--tailwind` flag to the `create-next-app` CLI,
to make it easier to bootstrap a Next.js app with Tailwind CSS
pre-configured. This is going to be the **default**. To opt-out of
Tailwind CSS, you can use the `--no-tailwind` flag.

### Why?

Tailwind CSS is one of the most popular styling solutions right now, and
we would like to make it easier to get started.

Currently, the closest you can come to this is by running `pnpm create
next-app -e with-tailwindcss` which will clone the
https://github.com/vercel/next.js/tree/canary/examples/with-tailwindcss
example. But that example is not configured for the App Router. This PR
will let you add Tailwind CSS to both `app/`, `pages/`, and start out
with TypeScript or JavaScript via the CLI prompts.

(Some community feedback
https://twitter.com/dev_jonaskaas/status/1632367991827443713,
https://twitter.com/samselikoff/status/1634662473331617794)

### How?

We are adding 4 new templates to the CLI bundle.

> Note: The styling is not pixel-perfect compared to the current
templates (using CSS modules) to require fewer overrides, but I tried to
match it as close as possible. Here are a few screenshots:

#### For reviewers

This introduces 4 new templates, with a very similar code base to the
original ones. To keep the PR focused, I decided to copy over duplicate
code, but we could potentially create a shared folder for files that are
the same across templates to somewhat reduce the CLI size. Not sure if
it's worth it, let me know. Probably fine for now, but something to
consider if we are adding more permutations in the future.

Use https_proxy environment variable in next/font/google (#46822)
When fetching CSS or font files from Google Fonts, it won't work if
you're required to use a proxy. This change makes it look for the
`http(s)_proxy` environment variable, and if it's defined it creates a
fetch agent using
[https-proxy-agent](https://github.com/TooTallNate/node-https-proxy-agent).

Also fixes fetch errors not being properly logged.

Fixes #45034
Closes NEXT-690

feat: add OTEL instrumentation for next-server + OTEL example (#46198)
fixes NEXT-479

## content

This PR adds a `getTracer` API to Next.js that uses the `otel/api` under
the hood to provide Next.js level instrumentation through Open
Telemetry.

This also adds an example `with-opentelemetry` to demonstrate how it can
be used, assuming you have a collector.

This allows most notably to have `getServerSideProps` and `fetch` calls
inside Server Components traced.

## details

- we hide most internals spans, if you want to see all of them, use the
NEXT_OTEL_VERBOSE=1 env var
- if you want to use this, you'll need to rely on the
`config.experimental.instrumentationHook` config option to initialise
OTEL, like in the example

Add loader-runner to compiled packages (#45962)
This adds `loader-runner` to the compiled packages distributed with
Next.js

This is a dependency of Turbopack's webpack loader support. Currently,
users have to manually install `loader-runner` in their application to
use webpack loaders with Turbopack. This will allow Turbopack to require
loader-runner from within the installed version of Next.js instead.

Test Plan: `require('./packages/next/dist/compiled/loader-runner/')`

chore(deps): upgrade cross-spawn to 7.0.3 (#45839)
The PR upgrades `cross-spawn` to `7.0.3`. The precompiled has also been
updated. The `cross-spawn` version is still pinned after the PR.

-----

So I have been working on improving Next.js build performance recently.
One thing that catches my eye is this:

<img width="1751" alt="image"
src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/40715044/218383194-5b24c737-0d97-4434-bbbf-ba5752072882.png">

The flamegraph shows the `semver` inside `cross-spawn` is one of the
hottest functions.

Then I take a look at the `cross-spawn`, turns out that `cross-spawn`
has `semver` already removed:
https://github.com/moxystudio/node-cross-spawn/pull/125

According to the CHANGELOG of `cross-spawn`, the only breaking change is
that `cross-spawn@7` is dropping `Node.js < 8` support. So I assume it
would be fine to upgrade `cross-spawn` to the latest version `7.0.3`,
thus eliminating the extra performance overhead introduced by `semver`.

Make turbotrace run after the webpack build (#45621)
- [x] Depends on https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/45776

Turbotrace occupies too many memories while running; this PR makes it
run after the webpack build is finished, it can reduce the memory
hogging by webpack and turbotrace, thus avoiding OOM

The `maxFiles` option in turbotrace is removed because there is
`memoryLimit` option takes over its role.

chore(eslint-config-next): bump eslint-import-resolver-typescript (#43010)
<!--
Thanks for opening a PR! Your contribution is much appreciated.
To make sure your PR is handled as smoothly as possible we request that
you follow the checklist sections below.
Choose the right checklist for the change that you're making:
-->

## Bug

Bumps `eslint-import-resolver-typescript` in `eslint-config-next` to the
latest version to pick up a fix from `3.1.0`. As mentioned here,
https://github.com/import-js/eslint-import-resolver-typescript/issues/107,
the typescript parser is unable to resolve the `typesVersions ` field in
their `package.json`. An example repo using this is
[`@vercel/examples-ui`](385a2e9686/packages/ui/package.json (L14-L22))
which will report an eslint `import/no-unresolved` error when using the
previous version of `eslint-import-resolver-typescript` (see
https://github.com/import-js/eslint-import-resolver-typescript/issues/107).
This was fixed in
https://github.com/import-js/eslint-import-resolver-typescript/pull/110

This can be locally fixed by bumping
`>=eslint-import-resolver-typescript@3.1.0` but decided it should be
resolved here too.

feat(next/mdx): support experimental mdx-rs loader (#41919)
<!--
Thanks for opening a PR! Your contribution is much appreciated.

you follow the checklist sections below.
Choose the right checklist for the change that you're making:

This PR implements a configuration option in `next.config.js` to support
for rust-based MDX compiler (https://github.com/wooorm/mdxjs-rs).
Currently it is marked as experimental, as mdx-rs and loader both may
need some iteration to fix regressions.

When a new experimental flag is set (`mdxRs: true`), instead of using
`@mdx/js` loader `next/mdx` loads a new webpack loader instead.
Internally, it mostly mimics mdx/js's loader behavior, however actual
compilation will be delegated into next/swc's binding to call mdx-rs's
compiler instead.

I choose to use next-swc to expose its binding function, as mdx-rs
internally uses swc already and creating new binary can double up
bytesize (with all the complex processes of publishing new package).

feat(create-next-app): JS/TS prompt (with appDir support); enhanced testing (#42012)
Resubmitting this PR following this comment from Tim. This work has been done already and we can build off of it to get this in faster.

> Just to be clear we're planning to rework create-next-app to give you the option to choose between JavaScript or TypeScript so it'll solve this request. For `app` right now it'll stay TypeScript till that is implemented.
>
> _Originally posted by @timneutkens in https://github.com/vercel/next.js/discussions/41745#discussioncomment-3985833_

---

I added the `--ts, --typescript` flag to `create-next-app` in https://github.com/vercel/next.js/pull/24655, and since then I have seen it used very frequently, including in recent issues (such as https://github.com/vercel/next.js/issues/33314) and most Next.js tutorials on YouTube. I noticed the template logic added in this PR was also used to add the `appDir` configuration as well.

We discussed a while ago adding the following user flow:

- `create-next-app --js, --javascript` creates a JS project
- `create-next-app --ts, --typescript` creates a TS project
- `create-next-app [name]` (no `--js, --ts`) prompts the user to choose either JS or TS, with TS selected by default.

### Review

Adding support for appDir and refactoring the templates brought the pain-of-review up a bit, but it's not so bad when broken into increments.

The original 8-file diff is here:
1f47d9b0bf

And the PR that brought the diff up to 59 files (mostly owed to `app` template dirs and file structure refactors):
bd3ae4afd3 ([PR link](https://github.com/ctjlewis/next.js/pull/3/files))

Bundle ssr client layer excepts react externals (#41606)
Bundle the ssr client layer for RSC, this solves the problem when
there's an esm package is using on client components, but esm imports
the installed react instead of the built-in react version since esm
imports is not intercepted by require hook.

After bundling the ssr client layer and treating react as externals, now
react compiles as cjs externals and could be intercepted by require
hook, other code are bundled together which can also get optimized.

refactor dev overlay into hot reloader (#41231)
Move react-dev-overlay into hot reloader client components, and let it imported by app router. So then we don't need to have hot reloader and react tree as adjacent sibilings but the overlay with error boundary is wrapping the react tree

Do not bundle react-dom in the SSR build (#41227)
Currently `react-dom` isn't handled as an external dependency in SSR,
unlike `react`. This means that the ReactDOM imported by client
components isn't the same instance as the ReactDOM that does SSR.

This PR also upgrades React experimental to the latest version.
